2012 Tennessee Federation Convention

Special Note: The toll free telephone number for the Hilton Memphis Hotel was incorrect in the printed copies of the Tennessee Federation News that was mailed out to our members. The correct number is: (800) 445-8667.

The 2012 Tennessee Federation Convention will be jointly hosted by these 4 chapters: Germantown, Memphis, Memphis Postal and Millington. Donald Smith, Convention Chair and the Host Committee are working hard to have a great convention. They invite you and your chapter to come to West Tennessee and take part. Make your plans now.

The dates for the next Convention are: Monday, April 16 - Tuesday April 17, 2012. You may want to plan on arriving on Sunday April 15th.

The Convention will be held at the Hilton Memphis Hotel, 939 Ridge Lake Boulevard in Memphis. Room rates will be $105 plus 15.95% tax (single or double occupancy).. Reservations need to be made directly with the hotel no later than March 16, 2012.

The total registration costs will be $50. If you want to attend only the Conference, that will be $20 and if you want to attend only the Banquet, that cost will be $30.

Each Chapter needs to submit a Delegate Form as soon as possible.
Each member attending needs to submit a Registration Form as soon as possible.

Announcement from the Convention Committee:
Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye, come one and all!  A gathering time is fast approaching and great excitement lies ahead.  If we have succeeded in getting your attention, We would like to share some information with you about our 56th Federation Convention being held April 16 – 17, 2012 at the beautiful Hilton Memphis hotel.  Contacts, costs, location, directions, hotel booking, and most other information needed to secure a room, register for the convention, pay fees and actually arrive at the correct site for the convention can be found on the registration form included in January issue of the Federation Newsletter and on this website, so that should not need to be repeated here.

The registration form is different this year and we would like to discuss some of the changes.  Your requests for menu options have been heard.  Three choices are being offered for the banquet meal which will be served to you at your table.  Since many members are accompanied at the convention by their non-member spouse and some invite member prospects or other guests, we reverted back to the format of older versions of the form and provided a line for spouse, also followed by a meal preference line. In addition, spouse and guest are now listed on the same line and are highly encouraged to attend both the convention and banquet.  If accompanied by a nonmember spouse and you also bring guest(s), use the line on the front of the form for your spouse and the back for guests.  Please indicate a meal preference for each guest listed.  If you are not accompanied by your spouse and bring guests, list one of your guests on the front of the form and use the back for the rest.  It is very important to indicate the meal preference of each attendee by circling the appropriate selection on the front of the form or listing it with each name on the back.

Since the convention program is in an early stage of development, information on activities, registration, board meetings, etc. will be shared at a later date.  We expect that the timeline will be about the same as it has been for previous conventions.

In conclusion, our committee is excited about the plans for our annual state convention this year.  In addition to taking care of NARFE business and promoting the aims and objectives of the National Association, conventions are an excellent time to connect with old friends, make new friends, discuss common interests and concerns, and enjoy fellowship with an exceptional federal family.  Everyone who is able to attend is cordially invited to join us.  We look forward to seeing you there.

News from the 2009 Federation Convention

The 2009 Tennessee Federation Convention is now history. This is the highlights of what was done this year in Jackson. The host chapter was the Jackson Chapter with help by the Trenton Chapter.

Of the Resolutions submitted, only 2 were put forward out of the Resolution Committee.

One had to do with allowing the Federation President to conduct a vote of the elected Federation Board by means of email, fax or written correspondence. This was voted on and passed but according to the Parliamentarian additional wording and details will need to be written in the Bylaws in order to implement this measure.

The other made changes to the per capita dues paid by chapters to the Federation, lowering from $4 to $3 for renewing members. This was approved by the delegates.

An election of officers was conducted.  This year, 3 offices had 2 candidates seeking the job. The results of the voting for those 3 posts was:

For President, Carey Frazier received the most votes.

For 3rd Vice President, James L (Larry) Henderson received the most votes.

For Secretary, Linda LaMay received the most votes.

The following candidates ran unopposed and were elected by acclamation: 1st Vice President Larry Cunningham, 2nd Vice President John Wells, Treasurer Marie Anglin, Legislative  Chairman Jim Glenn and Membership Chairman J.C. Whitney.

This year the Leo Potts NARFE-PAC Award was again won by the Cumberland County Chapter. A new award this year called the Wieda White Tolley Alzheimer's Award was won by the Athens Chapter.

The first annual Leo Potts award went to the Cumberland County Chapter #1719. This award is given in honor of Leo Potts who worked very diligently for NARFE -PAC in years past. The chapter honored each year will be the one whose members contributed the most per capita towards the NARFE-PAC the preceding year.

The deceased members were honored at this years Federation Convention. The list includes those reported from April 2006 - April 2007 from the various chapters. While this list is believed to be inclusive of all members, we regret any that were mistakenly left off. To see the list of names click here.

There was only one resolution brought before the convention this year, that was to change the State Convention to a two year cycle rather than the current every year cycle. The measure was overwhelmingly voted down. The next convention will be held in 2008.
